India @ London Olympics 2012

Hello dear readers,

The London Olympics 2012 ended with a mesmerizing closing ceremony on Sunday i.e. 12 August 2012. The performance of India has greatly improved over the past few Olympic games. However, there is still miles to go. India stood 55th in the long list of 204 countries with a total of 6 medals in it's kitty. 0 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze. The 0 gold fig brings a lot of disappointment for us. Though the level of sports have increased in India but still has not attained the heights as it should have reached. On the other hand, China has reached a benchmark in sports. They have graduated from 19 sports in 1984 to 29 in 2012 whereas India moved from 11 sports in 1988 to 12 in 2012. The gold medal which used to be reserved for India  during previous decades in hockey too moved far away. Hockey has been very disappointing as we stand last in the list.

I  feel that India has a great potential in excelling in sports. In a population of 1.22 billion getting only 6 medals is quite shameful. Lack of awareness is one of the major factors which is responsible for these situations. In these games I witnessed many sports which I've never heard nor seen before. India is a talented nation. With little more efforts and raising opportunities for youth, India can touch the mark. Here, we give prime most importance to studies, which is good but some children are specially meant for sports. Sachin Tendulkar for instance was not good in his studies but everyone knows him today for the sport he plays. Parents want their children either to be a doctor or an engineer. Sports is considered secondary and is given importance only for the "sports quota" during college admission. Moreover, more attention is given to cricket rather than any other sports. In China the kids are sent to training for sports at an age of 5 or 6. Their only aim is to get medal in the Olympics. The training is very tough and rigorous. This is how they do it. India  lacks in providing infrastructure and the facilities that are required by the sports person. We all know that former gold medalist Abhinav Bindra was trained all by the expenses of his father.

I feel its high time that sports should be given equal importance as studies. Students should be persuaded to go for sports so that they can make their country feel proud in the events of Olympics, Commonwealth games, Asian games etc. I would like to congratulate all the medalists who made our country proud. Congratulations to Gagan Narang, Sushil Kumar, Saina Nehwal, Mery Kom, Yogeshwar Dutt and Vijay Kumar.

Thank you :)

Some facts about ILP

 Hello readers,
Finally my 3 months long Initial Learning Program(ILP) at TCS is over. These 3 months are truly memorable period of my life. I had plenty of questions when I was to join this training program. So, this post is dedicated to all my friends who will be joining TCS for their ILP program. I had my training in ITIS(IT in infrastructure sevices) at Coimbatore (cbe). As  there is little awareness among us regarding this field I'll share my experience. My ILP commenced on 26th March 2012 and it ended on 21st June 2012. I have framed it as FAQs. I hope this will help all of you who are goining to join ILP in the near future.

Q1.What kind of accommodation is provided by TCS?
Ans. TCS provides accommodation whose rent is deducted from HRA. We were 3 in a single room. All the basic amenities are provided here. Sometimes you are even made to change your accommodation during these 3 months. So be prepared for it . There isn't any provision for wi-fi. Kindly carry a dongle for internet as I feel it's the best option for internet here. Cooking isn't permitted.

Q2.Do TCS provides transport from accommodation to teknoturf?
Ans. Yes they do. This facility is bared by TCS so we are not charged for this.

Q3.What kind of food is available at cbe?
Ans. The main food is dosa(roast as what they call it), idli, parotta, pongal, khichdi etc. There is provision for tiffin system as well. You are charged for the same and the tiffins are delivered at teknoturf for lunch and at the hostel for breakfast and dinner. Otherwise, there are canteens where you can have sappad(south indian food). For north Indian food there are several restaurants but it  might not live up to your expectations. But you'll surely enjoy as it'll  just be a matter of few days. Some restaurants that I have been to are Duet, Delhiwaala, Cloud 9, Greens and grains etc. They serve good north Indian food.

Q4.What is taught in ILP?
Ans. The curriculum has two parts:
ELS(english language skills) and technical part.
ELS : We are taught to work in teams. Regular assessments, extempore, skits, email writing, dining        etiquette etc are conducted. Towards the end we have language labs as well to tune listening as well as speaking abilities.
Technical:The course is divided into modules like System basics, networking , Linux, Windows, several short modules and finally the specialization subject. At the end of each module we have a module test which is online and the result is generated at the completion of exam. During the modules there are quizzes as well. The marks of these tests determine the rating that one has scored in the entire training.

Q5. What are the nearby places to visit?
Ans.The nearest hill station is Ooty. It's about 80 km. Among other places to visit are Kodaikanal, Allepey in Kerala, Pudducherry etc. You get time during weekends to explore cbe. If the weekends are long you can explore nearby states as well. For shopping, there is only one mall here i.e. Brookefields. It's nice place to hangout. It has all the outlets, a nice food court, and multiplex. For shopping sarees especially south Indian style there are several showrooms. Some of them are PSR, nalli silk, The chennai silk etc.

Q6.What are the timing for classes?
Ans. My classes were from 10.00 AM to 8.30 PM. While the morning batch had their timing from 7:00AM to 5:45 PM. You are not provided for leave during ILP but you can avail upto 2 days leave if you are ill(medical reasons).
Weekends are off but towards the end of ILP you are asked to work on Sat. as well.

Q7.How is the base branch decided?
Ans Thanks to God that I got my first preference, Delhi. Nobody has ever understood the criteria of getting the locations. In ITIS you get to know your base branch 2 days prior to the completion of ILP.

Q8.How many days leave do we get after the completion of ILP?
Ans.It isn't fixed our batch got leave for 17 days. A minimum of 9 days leave is provided otherwise.

Altogether ILP is a great experience. I learnt a lot as well as equally enjoyed this period. I hope this information will be helpful to all who are going to join ITIS ILP. In case of any query please do leave a comment. I'll surely try to help out.

Thank you....
Looking forward for your response...:-)

Coimbatore's experiences-part 1

Hello readers,
This time there is something different in my post. This post is written from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.I have joined TCS as Assistant Systems Engineer- Trainee. So I am getting trained here for the same. This is a nice city except for certain problems which are common in every new place. I arrived here on March 24 and happy to say that I have completed more than one month very happily and comfortably. It's for the first time that I' ve been away from home and family. But so far it has been a great experience. The food is typically south Indian comprising of idli, sambhar, dosa and rice. Even if you go for the gol gappa's and traditional chaat you will find sambhar as liquid in it.
As far as I 've observed the people here they are quite reserved who smiles very rarely. But they do stare people whom they find different especially north indians. They don't understand hindi. So, its very difficult to converse with people. We use more of actions  to explain them. It's still full of fun.
Life is fully hectic here. We spend our weekdays at teknoturf (they conduct our training for ITIS) and weekends at Brookefields (the only mall at coimbatore). There is no Mc Donalds here :-( :-(. I am really missing Delhi's food here. The thought of Mc D's burger, Haldiram's snacks brings water into my mouth. I 've really realised their importance here. Once I purchased momos here from the food court of Brookefields. They were the worst momos that I've ever tasted in my life. They were filled with potato stuffing. They really tasted yuck and  cost Rs. 85 only for 6 pieces. Well this was just an example. Such experiences are felt regularly here.
There are many beautiful places nearby. Ooty is around 85km from here. I haven't been to Ooty as of now. But I'll definitely post my experience once I visit that place. I have just went to Kodaikanal. It's a hill station which is around 160km from coimbatore. Its like an ordinary hill station. After seeing hill stations like Nainital, Almora, Shimla, Manali, Munnar I find all of them alike. But the hill stations of South India are famous for their home made chocolates. They are available in all flavors and really tastes well.
Apart from my Coimbatore's experience there is something else which is making me excited. Its the performance of DELHI DAREDEVILS. They are playing amazingly well. I really love the way Sehwag plays his game. He enjoys his game to the fullest. That's what makes him different from the  rest of the players. Had I been in Delhi I would have definitely enjoyed the game at Ferozeshah Kotla.
Thats all for now....
Thanks for reading...
