Hello readers,
Finally my 3 months long Initial Learning Program(ILP) at TCS is over. These 3 months are truly memorable period of my life. I had plenty of questions when I was to join this training program. So, this post is dedicated to all my friends who will be joining TCS for their ILP program. I had my training in ITIS(IT in infrastructure sevices) at Coimbatore (cbe). As there is little awareness among us regarding this field I'll share my experience. My ILP commenced on 26th March 2012 and it ended on 21st June 2012. I have framed it as FAQs. I hope this will help all of you who are goining to join ILP in the near future.
Q1.What kind of accommodation is provided by TCS?
Ans. TCS provides accommodation whose rent is deducted from HRA. We were 3 in a single room. All the basic amenities are provided here. Sometimes you are even made to change your accommodation during these 3 months. So be prepared for it . There isn't any provision for wi-fi. Kindly carry a dongle for internet as I feel it's the best option for internet here. Cooking isn't permitted.
Q2.Do TCS provides transport from accommodation to teknoturf?
Ans. Yes they do. This facility is bared by TCS so we are not charged for this.
Q3.What kind of food is available at cbe?
Ans. The main food is dosa(roast as what they call it), idli, parotta, pongal, khichdi etc. There is provision for tiffin system as well. You are charged for the same and the tiffins are delivered at teknoturf for lunch and at the hostel for breakfast and dinner. Otherwise, there are canteens where you can have sappad(south indian food). For north Indian food there are several restaurants but it might not live up to your expectations. But you'll surely enjoy as it'll just be a matter of few days. Some restaurants that I have been to are Duet, Delhiwaala, Cloud 9, Greens and grains etc. They serve good north Indian food.
Q4.What is taught in ILP?
Ans. The curriculum has two parts:
ELS(english language skills) and technical part.
ELS : We are taught to work in teams. Regular assessments, extempore, skits, email writing, dining etiquette etc are conducted. Towards the end we have language labs as well to tune listening as well as speaking abilities.
Technical:The course is divided into modules like System basics, networking , Linux, Windows, several short modules and finally the specialization subject. At the end of each module we have a module test which is online and the result is generated at the completion of exam. During the modules there are quizzes as well. The marks of these tests determine the rating that one has scored in the entire training.
Q5. What are the nearby places to visit?
Ans.The nearest hill station is Ooty. It's about 80 km. Among other places to visit are Kodaikanal, Allepey in Kerala, Pudducherry etc. You get time during weekends to explore cbe. If the weekends are long you can explore nearby states as well. For shopping, there is only one mall here i.e. Brookefields. It's nice place to hangout. It has all the outlets, a nice food court, and multiplex. For shopping sarees especially south Indian style there are several showrooms. Some of them are PSR, nalli silk, The chennai silk etc.
Q6.What are the timing for classes?
Ans. My classes were from 10.00 AM to 8.30 PM. While the morning batch had their timing from 7:00AM to 5:45 PM. You are not provided for leave during ILP but you can avail upto 2 days leave if you are ill(medical reasons).
Weekends are off but towards the end of ILP you are asked to work on Sat. as well.
Q7.How is the base branch decided?
Ans Thanks to God that I got my first preference, Delhi. Nobody has ever understood the criteria of getting the locations. In ITIS you get to know your base branch 2 days prior to the completion of ILP.
Q8.How many days leave do we get after the completion of ILP?
Ans.It isn't fixed our batch got leave for 17 days. A minimum of 9 days leave is provided otherwise.
Altogether ILP is a great experience. I learnt a lot as well as equally enjoyed this period. I hope this information will be helpful to all who are going to join ITIS ILP. In case of any query please do leave a comment. I'll surely try to help out.
Thank you....
Looking forward for your response...:-)
